What to Look for.
If you have a problem with ants, birds, carpet beetles, clothes
moths, cockroaches, mites, pantry pests, rats, silverfish,
yellowjackets or similar pests look under General Structural Pest
Management below. If the problem is termites, look under Termite
Management. These lists will give you names of companies and
pest control operators (PCOs) that provide IPM services. After looking
at the list, if you still need help deciding how to choose a PCO, go

Fewer Pesticide
Applications.
Integrated Pest Management or IPM is an approach to pest control that
utilizes regular monitoring to determine if and when treatments are
needed and employs physical, mechanical, cultural, biological and
educational tactics to keep pest numbers low enough to prevent
intolerable damage or annoyance. Least-toxic chemical controls are
used as a last resort.
IPM methods lead to
fewer pesticide applications, reducing contamination of air and water.
Generally, the companies on this list emphasize monitoring, exclusion,
sanitation, baits, and use least-toxic pesticides as a last resort.
Some of the termite companies offer non-toxic treatments such as
microwaves, heat, and electrogun. Others offer least-toxic treatments
such as borates or termite baits.
Conventional
Treatments.
Though these companies provide IPM services if asked, some of them may
suggest a conventional treatment first. For instance, some of the
termite companies will suggest fumigation for drywood termites. If the
treatment suggested poses problems for you, ask them about

Alternate Termite
Treatments.
If drywood termites are discovered in your home, you might not have to
fumigate. Drywood termites can be killed by heat. Some providers on
this list use either microwaves, convection heaters, or high voltage
electricity to heat termites to lethal temperatures. BIRC has
